Do Not Go For Any Big Goal Without First Having This

5 mins read

In a world obsessed with optimization, productivity, and the next big milestone, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle. High-achieving professionals like us are often drawn into the pursuit of more—more money, more success, more impact. But here’s the paradox: chasing the “more” without first addressing your core needs can lead you further away from fulfillment.

This post dives into a concept I call the Performance Paradox: the trap of seeking external results to fill internal gaps. It’s about understanding why your foundation matters and how meeting your needs is the first, essential step toward achieving true fulfillment and success.

Introduction: The Cost of Chasing “More”

Have you ever hit a major goal—one you worked tirelessly for—only to feel empty or dissatisfied afterward? I’ve been there. From a chaotic youth to a high-stakes finance career, I chased what I thought would bring me self-worth, stability, and happiness, only to discover I had skipped over the basics: my needs.

The truth is, success built on an unstable foundation crumbles. Before you start climbing the mountain, you need to ensure you have what’s required to make the journey. This checklist will help you evaluate where you’re at, meet your needs, and set yourself up for sustainable growth and fulfillment.

The Seven Core Needs for Fulfillment

1. Security

Your most basic need: a roof over your head, food on the table, and a consistent income. Without this, everything else feels unstable. Security brings a sense of safety and calm that allows you to focus on building your life, not just surviving it.

2. Belonging

We’re wired for connection. You need a tribe—a community that supports, uplifts, and challenges you. Isolation leads to stagnation. Find your squad, whether that’s family, friends, or a group of like-minded men who hold you accountable.

3. Esteem

If you don’t believe you’re enough now, no amount of success will change that. Cultivate self-worth and appreciation for who you are today, independent of external validation.

4. Growth

Stagnation kills the spirit. As humans, we need a sense of progress—a trajectory to follow. Growth doesn’t mean running from who you are but expanding and evolving from a place of curiosity and joy.

5. Understanding

Do you know your place in the world? Understanding your role—within your relationships, work, and community—brings clarity and confidence. Take time to observe how you fit into the bigger picture and what you’re here to contribute.

6. Autonomy

Freedom is essential. Without the ability to make your own decisions and act on your desires, you’ll feel cornered and frustrated. Build financial, emotional, and mental freedom to create space for intentional action.

7. Contribution

We’re here to serve something bigger than ourselves. Whether it’s your family, a cause, or your community, contributing to a greater purpose fuels fulfillment and gives life meaning.

The Performance Paradox

The Performance Paradox occurs when you chase external success to fill unmet internal needs. For example:

  • Seeking esteem through wealth: You may make millions but still feel unworthy.
  • Pursuing growth without security: You’ll feel scattered and unsafe.
  • Building success in isolation: The victory will feel hollow if you have no one to share it with.

To break free, start by ensuring your needs are met first. Then, build your values, freedom, and fulfillment on top of that solid foundation.

How to Apply These Concepts

Here’s your checklist:

  1. Security: Do you have stable shelter, food, and income?
  2. Belonging: Are you part of a supportive community or tribe?
  3. Esteem: Do you believe you’re enough as you are today?
  4. Growth: Do you have a clear trajectory of where you’re headed?
  5. Understanding: Do you know your role in your relationships, work, and life?
  6. Autonomy: Are you free to act on your values and desires?
  7. Contribution: Are you giving back to something greater than yourself?

If you answered no to any of these questions, focus your energy on addressing those gaps. They are your foundation.

Conclusion: Building Fulfillment from the Ground Up

You can’t build a skyscraper on a shaky foundation. Fulfillment comes when your needs are met, your actions align with your values, and you have the freedom to pursue what matters most. Before you chase the next big thing, check in with yourself. Are your core needs met?

This is a process I’m actively refining in my own life. It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress. By focusing on your needs first, you can avoid the trap of the Performance Paradox and start building a life that truly fulfills you.
